Everything will be okay in the end, if it’s not okay, it’s not the end. This is an extremely meaningful quote that one of my amazing friends told me when I found out I would be having surgery.
Anyway, how rude of me. I forgot to introduce myself. If you are reading this, you are probably my family or a friend. However, for those of you who don’t know me my name is Helena. I am 16 and live in New Zealand. You probably know what this blog is about, but for those of you who really don’t know, I will tell you. It is about my journey through fighting scoliosis.
Let me take you back to April 2013. The time I was diagnosed with scoliosis. Twice a week, for twelve weeks, I had physiotherapy in the morning before school. This meant that I had to get up at 5.00 am to be in the city by 6.00 am then drive back for school. At physio I did rehabilitation exercises so that the muscles around my spine become stronger helping the pain. Although it was a lot of work, I really miss going and miss the early mornings and getting a smoothie from a cafe before school ;). Physio became a really positive experience for me and through my experience I have decided to become a physiotherapist specializing in spines and scoliosis.
On the 9th of August 2013, I found out I would be having scoliosis surgery. Although I expected it, it came as a big shock to me! However, I have the most amazing friends and family who have supported me so much and I really appreciate it! The date has been changed a few times but is now the 18th February 2014. This means I will have to miss alot of school which sucks but I can’t wait to have a straight spine and to be taller 😀 !
The curves of my spine are 40 degrees thoracic and 60 degrees lumber. I have recently had another xray which I am finding out about on the 24th January. My friends, family and I have all put on a piece of paper what we think the curves of my spine will be! The person who gets the closest overall gets an iced tea and a chocolate bar. I thought this would be a fun idea as I believe having a positive attitude and a sense of humour will help me get through my surgery. After all, life does throw some curved balls 😉
Personally, I believe that everything happens for a reason and this is the journey God has planned for me ❤
Theres only a month left till surgery and honestly, I can’t wait!! Thanks to everyone for all the love and support.
Love always, Helena.x
